Catalana chicken is a dual purpose rare breed that was born in Catalonia district (near Barcelona), Spain. It takes its name from Catalonia and is also known as El Pratt, Buff Catallana, Catalina del Pratt Leonada or simply Pratt. In the second half of the nineteenth century, Catalana chicken was thought to have developed over a long period of use with Asian stock. However, it is not clear whether the Asian stock was Cochin China chicken or Cochin chicken.

Catalana chicken is a Spanish breed of chicken. Pota Blava, Spanish: Gallina del Prat or Catalana del Prat, is a Spanish breed of domestic chicken. It originates in the area of El Prat de Llobregat in the comarca of Baix Llobregat, in Catalonia in eastern Spain. Catalana is a strong dual purpose breed that is kept for both eggs and meat.

Catalana chicken has gained popularity in some countries in Argentina and Latin America. Since they are not cool tough birds, their popularity is limited to southern countries. In 1902, they gained international attention during the World's Fair in Madrid, Spain. Catalana chickens were included in the American Poultry Association's Standard of Perfection in 1949.

Physical Characteristics of Catallana Chicken

Catalan chicken is a dual purpose Mediterranean poultry variety. They are of rich buff color with greenish-black tail. They have big red spots with six points. Chirunati stands upright on the cock and on the hen and lies down after the first point. They have blue slate shanks and toes, and the sides of the ears are white. They have large red wattles, dark reddish brown eyes and horns. Chickens are good white and medium-sized egg layers, on average, the Catalana chicken weighs about 3.2-3.7kg and the chickens weigh about 2.3-2.7kg.

The Catalana chicken variety is suitable for both meat and egg production. They produce good quality meat. It is the only Mediterranean poultry species that grows for both eggs and meat. They fly well and cannot withstand captivity. Given the benefits of free ranges, they are also very good foresters. They like to give shelves in high places. They are very strong and tolerant of hot climates. Catalana chickens are not very friendly and tend to avoid human contact if possible.
